Reading is so much more than an academic skill. It helps our learners to make sense of their environment and expand their understanding of our world.
Early reading includes opportunities to develop communication by encouraging engagement, response and interaction with others.
Recognising objects, symbols and signs supports development of communication and helps understanding of routines and instructions as well as a shared language to enable requesting. This enables development of independence skills as learners can understand what is happening next.
We encourage pupils to engage with reading through sensory stories, sharing songs and rhymes and through motivating activities designed to promote joint and shared attention. Using sensory elements and immersive experiences to bring stories to life enables all pupils to access books and develop their love of reading through shared experiences.
